Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta injures his hip at OTA

A key offensive member of the Baltimore Ravens, tight end Dennis Pitta, might be out for an extended period of time.
“In unfortunate news, Dennis Pitta re-injured his hip at today’s OTA session and is undergoing tests to determine the severity,” Ravens general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome said Friday in a statement posted to the team’s official Twitter account. “This is incredibly disappointing, obviously for Dennis, and for the Ravens.
“A year ago, he led our team with a career-high 86 receptions, the most ever by a Ravens’ tight end, and was named a second alternate to the Pro Bowl.
“Dennis is one of the great Ravens, and he has done everything he can to make our team better.”
According to the Ravens’ website, Pitta suffered the injury stretching for a catch. After falling to the turf without contact, Pitta tried to get up, but couldn’t put weight on his leg.
Pitta, who had shown promise early in his career, gained 729 yards in 2016, which was also a career high. The career season was a sign of optimism, considering that Pitta has had an extensive injury history with his hip, missing 41 games between 2013 and 2015 with a fracture/dislocation. He underwent two surgeries to the area.
Pitta isn’t the only tight end that has battled injuries for Baltimore.
Benjamin Watson tore his Achilles last season, had surgery and is continuing to rehab that injury. Maxx Williams landed on injured reserve for a nagging knee issue, and also had surgery. That leaves Crockett Gillmore, Darren Waller, and Nick Boyle on the roster.
The Ravens begin their mandatory minicamp June 13.
