Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith faced a four-game suspension before he suffered a season-ending injury in Sunday’s victory over the Detroit Lions, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Smith tore the Achilles tendon in his left ankle in the second quarter, which led the veteran defensive back to drop his fight over a looming ban for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, ESPN reported on Monday.

Smith will be allowed to serve the ban as he recovers from the injury, which will almost certainly require surgery to reattach the tendon. The Sun reported that Smith dropped his appeal of the PED violation after he suffered the injury.

Smith had played in the Ravens’ first 12 games this season and was a cog on defense, even as he battled a sore Achilles, which led him to miss practice time.
