Redskins' Vernon Davis turned skydiving wedding proposal from dream to reality

RICHMOND, Va. – “It came to me in a dream,” Vernon Davis revealed.
The Washington Redskins tight end spoke of the inspiration for the high-flying wedding proposal to his fiancé, Kayla Sortor, last month.
“I held onto it. It resonated, and so, I brought it into fruition,” Davis told Paste BN Sports.
It was back in February that Davis – a 13-year veteran – decided to make the dream a reality. The planning begun as he booked a plane and four skydivers.
In the summer, Davis explained, he and Sortor would walk onto a beach and the plane would fly overhead. One by one, the skydivers would jump, glide down in their parachutes and approach the couple, with each one removing his suit to reveal a message across his white T-shirt.
“WILL” on the first. “YOU” on the second. “MARRY” the third and “ME?” on the fourth.
Davis selected Ocean City, Md., as the location for his proposal. Although he grew up in D.C. and attended the University of Maryland, he had never been to the beach. Sortor went often while growing up, however, and frequently spoke of wanting to take Davis.
“I told her we were going to an event for one of my former teammates,” Davis explained after Monday afternoon’s training camp practice. “She thought we were going to an all-white (attire) gathering. She got dressed, knew we had to be at a certain place at a certain time. Bada-bing, bada-boom.”
After the skydivers revealed the message on their shirts, Davis got on one knee and proposed. Sortor said yes.
“I didn’t know what (her reaction) would be. I just expected her to be extremely surprised and she was,” Davis said. “She was happy. She just couldn’t believe it.”
