Trial date set in Will Smith shooting death case

The man accused in the shooting death of former New Orleans defensive end Will Smith will go on trial on Dec. 1.

Judge Camille Buras set Cardell Hayes’ trial date at a hearing on Wednesday, Orleans Parish Criminal District Court representative Lydia Shanklin confirmed to Paste BN Sports. This is the third trial date set in the case.

Hayes was indicted on a second-degree murder charge for the death of Smith, who was shot and killed in April in an apparent road rage incident. Hayes was also charged with attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of Smith’s wife, Racquel Smith.

Hayes, who remained at the scene and claims the shooting was in self defense, has been in custody since the night of the shooting, with his bond set at more than $1 million.

Buras granted a motion to exclude the arrest report on Smith’s domestic violence arrest, according to NOLA.com. Smith wasn’t convicted in the case.  The defense will be allowed to write an opposition to the decision.
