The blind side protector for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be sidelined well into the 2017 NFL season, a significant blow to the team’s high-powered offense.

Left tackle Terron Armstead will undergo surgery to repair a torn left labrum in his shoulder and will miss between four and six months, Paste BN Sports’ Tom Pelissero has confirmed.

NFL Network was the first to report the injury.

Armstead missed nine games last season as he dealt with hip, leg, knee, and quad injuries.

Veteran Khalif Barnes, whom New Orleans signed his offseason, could fill in for Armstead. Ryan Ramczyk, the rookie tackle from Wisconsin taken with the last pick in the first round in this year’s NFL draft could also be an option. Guard Andrus Peat also has experience at tackle while he played at Stanford, while veteran right tackle Zach Strief is another potential stopgap.
