Two seasons after holding out into the second game of the season, Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor – a key piece of the team’s top-tier defense – agreed to terms on a lucrative contract extension.

The three-year extension is worth up to $36 million, $25 million of which are guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed to Paste BN Sports. The person spoke under the condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been publicly announced yet.

ESPN was the first to report on the agreement.

Prior to the completion of the extension, Chancellor, 29, was going to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

In 2016, Chancellor racked up 85 tackles, eight passes defended, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 12 games. Chancellor is the enforcer of Seattle’s secondary, and locking him up for the team’s near future was a priority.

“As long as the wheels let me,” Chancellor told reporters Monday when asked how long he wanted to play. “Until the wheels fall off. I can't really put a time frame on how long I want to play. However long my body holds up. However long the Lord allows me to. It's never up to me.

“I love this team. They gave me the first opportunity, the only opportunity. And I would love to retire here.”
