Who won the Super Bowl last year? How Chiefs pulled off third win in five seasons

Super Bowl 59 is rapidly approaching, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles set to meet Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The Chiefs are the defending NFL champions, winning last year's Super Bowl in dramatic fashion over the San Francisco 49ers. That made it three Super Bowl wins in the past five years – including back-to-back titles – for the Chiefs, one of the best runs of sustained success in NFL history.
With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, the Chiefs ran through the 2024 regular season in impressive fashion, racking up 15 wins en route to grabbing the top seed in the AFC playoffs. That helped put them in position to make some NFL history, with a possible three-peat on the table.
Here's what to know about the Chiefs winning last year's Super Bowl, and where their quest for a three-peat sits in NFL history.
Who won the Super Bowl last year?
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year, claiming a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Super Bowl 58 was just the second Super Bowl game to go to overtime. The Chiefs trailed 19-16 with less than two minutes to play, but a game-tying field goal in the final seconds left the score tied after four quarters. San Francisco took the lead in overtime with a field goal, but Mahomes' touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman helped Kansas City lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the end.
How many Super Bowl wins do Kansas City Chiefs have?
The Kansas City Chiefs have won four Super Bowls, one of the highest figures in the NFL. Only the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys have more.
The Chiefs made it to the first Super Bowl ever, but lost to the Green Bay Packers following the 1966 season. In Super Bowl 4, Kansas City won the big game for the first time, but the wait for a follow-up would end up lasting 50 years.
Kansas City has made up for lost time since then, though, going to four of the past five Super Bowls. That includes wins at Super Bowls 54, 57 and 58.
Kansas City Chiefs 2024 record
The Kansas City Chiefs posted an impressive 15-2 record in the 2024 NFL regular season, good enough to claim the top seed in the AFC (and the first-round playoff bye that came along with it).

- Week 2: W 26-25 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Has there ever been a Super Bowl three-peat?
The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl winners, but no team in the Super Bowl era has ever managed to make it three in a row.
As impressive as Kansas City's achievement over the past two seasons is, it's not particularly rare. The Chiefs are the ninth team to win two consecutive Super Bowls, meaning roughly one in six NFL champions repeat the following season. It's the three-peat that has proven elusive.
Some have come close: the Miami Dolphins lost Super Bowl 6 before winning the next two seasons, while the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to repeat twice in a six-year span (1974-1979), but both streaks were broken at the third attempt. Between 2001-04, the New England Patriots won three Super Bowls, but a failure to make the playoffs during the 2002 season broke their chances of making NFL history.
The closest anyone has come to a three-peat is the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers won titles in 1988 and 1989 but fell to the eventual champion New York Giants 15-13 in the NFC championship game after the 1990 season. Emmitt Smith and Co. won Super Bowls 27, 28 and 30, but a 38-28 loss to the 49ers in the NFC championship game in the 1994 season interrupted the streak.
