Chiefs vs Eagles Super Bowl predictions: What to expect in Super Bowl 59

Super Bowl Sunday is officially here. Just hours separate NFL fans from finding out whether the Kansas City Chiefs can become the first-ever team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Standing in the Chiefs' way is the Philadelphia Eagles. Nick Sirianni's squad is fresh off a 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game and is hoping to earn revenge against the Chiefs, who beat them 38-35 in Super Bowl 57.
Will the Eagles be able to get back at the Chiefs, or will Kansas City help further establish Patrick Mahomes as one of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks? Here's what to expect in the Super Bowl 59 battle between the Chiefs and Eagles.
Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl predictions
Here are some predictions for Super Bowl 59 between the Chiefs and Eagles:
Expect a lower-scoring Super Bowl
The Eagles and Chiefs both ranked top-five in scoring defense during the regular season. Philadelphia ranked second league wide allowing 17.8 points per game while Kansas City came in fourth with an average of 19.2. The Eagles have continued this trend in the playoffs, allowing an average of 18.3 points across their three games while the Chiefs are allowing 21.5 despite the Buffalo Bills' 29-point outburst in the AFC championship game.
Saquon Barkley won't go over rushing total
The Chiefs allowed the third-fewest rushing yards to running backs during the regular season and have performed well against upper-echelon backs. In Week 1, they limited Derrick Henry to a season-low 46 yards on 13 carries. Joe Mixon and James Cook have found slightly more success against Kansas City during the postseason, but the Chiefs still haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher on the season.
Barkley has averaged 147.3 rushing yards per game during the postseason, carrying the Eagles to the Super Bowl with his strong performance. He will likely need another big outing against Kansas City to allow Philadelphia to win its second-ever Lombardi Trophy, but going over his rushing total (112.5) isn't likely.
Patrick Mahomes may not have a big passing day
The Eagles defense ranks second in defensive EPA per passing play this season. In six games against teams that rank 10th or better in that category, Mahomes has averaged 254.2 passing yards per game with a modest 92.33 passer rating. He has just six passing touchdowns in those seven games and has thrown no more than one in any of those contests.
Mahomes will still impact the game; just don't be surprised if he makes more plays with his legs as opposed to big-time passing plays. The Chiefs quarterback has averaged 43 rushing yards per game in the Super Bowl and logged a career-best 66 rushing yards in Super Bowl 58.
Both Travis Kelce and Dallas Goedert should have big days
The Chiefs allowed the most receiving yards and the second-most receptions to tight ends during the regular season. The Eagles were excellent against tight ends during the regular season but have fallen off considerably since Nakobe Dean went down with a season-ending knee injury in the wild-card round.
Goedert has racked up 18 targets, 188 yards and a touchdown during the Eagles' first three playoff games while Kelce had a massive game against the Houston Texans before being limited against the Bills. Both should have plenty of space in which to operate and either could end up as his team's leading receiver during the contest.
Chiefs complete historic three-peat with 23-20 win over Eagles
The Eagles have a better roster than the Chiefs, but Super Bowl 59 profiles as a grind-it-out defensive game. That should make it close late, at which point the team with the better quarterback would have the edge.
While Hurts enjoyed a terrific game in Super Bowl 57 and looked great in this year's NFC championship game, Mahomes definitively ranks ahead of him in the league's quarterback power rankings. The Chiefs starter has a knack for making big plays at clutch times. That's part of the reason the 29-year-old has emerged with three Super Bowl wins; he simply makes the right plays when games are close, even on the NFL's biggest stage.
The Eagles defense may limit Mahomes to a mediocre stat line, but the Chiefs will still get the last laugh. Expect Mahomes and Harrison Butker to team up for another game-winning drive as Kansas City becomes the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
