Brandon Weeden, Texans grab control of AFC South from Colts

INDIANAPOLIS – Breaking down the Houston Texans’ 16-10 victory against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday:

Big picture: The Texans seized the moment with a gut-check performance that marked the franchise’s first-ever victory at Indianapolis in 14 tries. And they did it with Brandon Weeden, the team’s fourth quarterback this season, coming off the bench to relieve an injured T.J. Yates. Houston (7-7) is now in the driver’s seat to win the AFC South crown, controlling its own destiny.

Key moment: With just under three minutes to play, Texans cornerback Jonathan Joseph blasted Colts wide receiver Griff Whalen to force a fumble that was recovered by Kareem Jackson. The turnover thwarted the opportunity for a game-saving drive by the Colts and set up Nick Novak’s 32-yard field goal.

Breakout player: Weeden. Look who came through in a pinch? After getting dumped by the Dallas Cowboys when he was unable to provide a winning touch while subbing for an injured Tony Romo, Weeden landed in Houston – and came through. After Yates was sidelined by what is feared to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the second quarter, Weeden completed 11 of 18 passes for 105 yards with a touchdown.

Key stat: Alfred Blue rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries, which went a long way toward relieving pressure on Weeden.

What’s next: The Texans can claim the AFC South title by winning their final two games, at the Tennessee Titans next weekend and home against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17. The Colts play at the Miami Dolphins needing help - and hoping hard.
