Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt re-injured his back and the team placed him on the injured reserve list Wednesday morning.
Watt had surgery in late July for a herniated disc and this appears to be the same injury, a person familiar with the injury told Paste BN Sports on Tuesday night. The person requested anonymity because the team has not announced it.
The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year was believed to have suffered the injury in Thursday night’s loss to New England.
By being placed on IR,, Watt will miss a minimum of eight weeks. He sat out training camp and the entire preseason after the surgery this summer.
NFL Network was the first to report the development.
