Even though the Houston Texans have a bye week — fresh off of their first victory of the season over divisional rival Jacksonville — general manager Nick Caserio is still making moves to help the team get better.

On Wednesday, the Texans signed tight end Jordan Akins from the practice squad to the active roster.

Houston selected Akins in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After four seasons with the team, the former University of Central Florida tight end was released.

Akins, 30, was signed by the New York Giants in April 2022, but was cut in August after training camp.

The Texans brought him back to the team, signing Akins to their practice squad. He made the best of his three-game opportunity by catching seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

"Jordan has returned, and had a good attitude," said Caserio when asked about the roster move during his press conference Tuesday. "When a player leaves and comes back, you're not really sure how that's going to go, but Jordan has done a good job, had a good attitude."

Houston had a decision to make with Akins after elevating him to the game-day roster for three games, which is the maximum amount of time a practice squad player can use. And they liked what they saw.

"He's taken advantage of his opportunities when he's played. [Tight ends coach] Berb (Tim Berbenich) has done a good job with him," Caserio said. "It's been good to have Akins back in the building."

The Texans resume practice Monday as they prepare to travel to take on the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.
