Watch: Player gets second Gordie Howe hat trick of week
PHILADELPHIA - Believe it or not, Gordie Howe had just two Gordie Howe hat tricks over his Hall of Fame career and Flyers right wing Wayne Simmonds matched that in a week.
"I'm just trying to help the team in anyway I can," Simmonds said after his second in four days.
Against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, Simmonds fought Chris Thorburn and assisted on a goal by Brayden Schenn in the first period, then scored the game-winner in the third for a 4-3 Flyers lead.
Simmonds had also one in last Wednesday's 6-5 victory in Pittsburgh with two goals, an assist and a fight.
Simmonds, who has three Gordie Howe hat tricks in two seasons with the Flyers, was a day shy of the franchise record for the two fastest, as Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler had a pair in a span of three days in November 1983.
Simmonds needs one more this season to become the second Flyer with three in a season. Rick Tocchet had three of his franchise-best nine in 1986-87.
