Canadiens' Alexei Emelin fined $5,000 by NHL

NEW YORK (AP) — Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for hitting Vancouver Canucks forward Pascal Pelletier with the butt end of his stick.

No penalty was called on the play, which occurred at 11:35 of the second period Thursday night in Montreal.

The league's department of player safety announced Emelin's punishment on Friday night.

Emelin is due to play for host country Russia in the Sochi Olympics.
