Jordin Tootoo, other tryouts find jobs

In a sign of hope for NHL training camp tryouts, four landed jobs this week.

Forward Jordin Tootoo signed a one-year, $550,000 deal with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, getting back to the NHL after the Detroit Red Wings bought him out.

He had been demoted to Grand Rapids, Mich., of the American Hockey League last season and had a few short recalls. He was bought out to give him an opportunity to earn an NHL opportunity.

That will come with the Devils, who brought a handful of tryouts to camp. He's an energy-line guy with 808 career penalty minutes and made the Devils' 23-man opening roster.

Monday, the Calgary Flames signed defenseman Raphael Diaz, who split time between the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers last season.

Former Flames defenseman Shane O'Brien, whose contract was bought out in June, signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Florida Panthers. He will start the season in the American Hockey League.

The Minnesota Wild signed winger Ryan Carter, who had spent this fall in the New Jersey Devils' camp. He had 10 points in 62 games with the Devils last season and was part of New Jersey's effective fourth line during the 2012 run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The three join the Chicago Blackhawks' Daniel Carcillo and Montreal Canadiens' Drayson Bowman in landing jobs after showing up at camp on professional tryout contracts. Like Carter, Carcillo started elsewhere (Pittsburgh Penguins) before signing with a new team.

Bowman, who signed a two-way deal, was waived and was assigned to the AHL.

But not all news was good for tryouts: The Wild released goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and the Red Wings cut defenseman Aaron Rome.
