Robert Bortuzzo suspended for hit on Jaromir Jagr

New Jersey Devils winger Jaromir Jagr was knocked out of Tuesday's game and now, Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Robert Bortuzzo will have to sit.

The NHL announced Wednesday that Bortuzzo will be suspended two games for the "late violent hit."

Bortuzzo lined up Jagr in the second period after the Devils star had passed the puck.

"The puck is already in front of the net before Bortuzzo initiates the hit along the end boards, well after Jagr has released the puck," the NHL's Patrick Burke said in an accompanying video.

He said Bortuzzo had time to avoid Jagr, but chose to deliver the hit anyway.

The check was worthy of a suspension, Burke said, because of its "extreme lateness, its predatory nature and the significant head contact that results."

Jagr was on the ice for several minutes before getting up and heading to the dressing room. He didn't return to the game.

The team had no update on Jagr's condition on Wednesday, but Burke said that the league was told he isn't expected to miss any additional time.

The suspension, the first of Bortuzzo's career, will cost him $6,451.62 in pay.
