Evander Kane suspended for hit from behind
Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane is one of the NHL's more physical forwards, doling out hits on a regular basis.
But his hit from behind on Anaheim Ducks defenseman Clayton Stoner will cost him two games in the first suspension of his career.
The incident occurred with 10.5 seconds left in the second period. Kane, who hit Stoner square in the numbers after the defenseman chipped away the puck, received a five-minute major and game misconduct.
"Having tracked Stoner for considerable time and significant distance, Kane hits Stoner directly from behind, driving forcefully into him and causing him to crash face-first into the glass," the NHL's Patrick Burke said in an accompanying video.
Stoner wasn't hurt on the play. He got up to challenge Kane and played a regular shift in the third period.
Kane will forfeit $56,451.62 in pay.
Kane, who missed eight games after suffering a knee injury in the season opener, ranks third on the Jets with 71 hits. He has 10 points in 20 games for the Jets.
