Trades dominate day 2 of the NHL draft

SUNRISE, Fla—The NHL draft is supposed to be about the future. But this year's draft has been about veterans today as teams continue to make trades at a furious pace.

Day two of the NHL draft has started with the Anaheim Ducks acquiring speedster Carl Hagelin from the New York Rangers in exchange for Emerson Etem and a swap of draft picks.

The Edmonton Oilers also acquired a potential No. 1 goalie when they sent draft picks No. 57, No. 79 and 184 to the Rangers for goalie Cam Talbot. The Oilers also pick up pick No. 209 from New York. Talbot has a career .931 save percentage in 58 NHL games.

The Dallas Stars also may be close to addressing a goaltending need when they gave up a seventh-round pick for the right to talk to Antti Niemi before he becomes a free agent on July 1.

Earlier in the day, the Ducks acquired Anton Khudobin from the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman James Wisniewski.

The Hurricanes then acquired goalie Eddie Lack from the Vancouver Canucks for the 66th pick this season and a seventh-round pick in 2016.

"Eddie is a big-bodied goalie who has proven himself on the NHL level in the past two seasons," Carolina general manager Ron Francis said.

The Ducks made this deal strictly to clear cap space in order to be in a position to re-sign Jakob Silfverberg and Francois Beauchemin this summer. Beachemin will be an unrestricted free agent. The Ducks are also looking to extend Ryan Kesler's contract.

Wisniewski has a $5.5 million cap hit, and has two seasons remaining on his deal. The Ducks are also looking to next summer when they will be looking to re

Khodobin is a quality goalie and now he will be in the mix with Frederick Andersen and John Gibson. Because Gibson is on a two-way contract, he could be sent to the minors next season.
