Patrick Kane scores questionable goal against Predators to extend point streak
In case you haven't heard, Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane is on a roll. A historic roll.
Entering Thursday night's contest against the Nashville Predators, Kane was riding a 23-game point streak, good enough for a Blackhawks franchise record. Chicago fell behind early to Nashville, trailing 3-0 after two periods and looking for an offensive spark.
Enter Kane.
Early in the third period, the Blackhawks dumped a puck deep toward Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne. He appeared to briefly cover up the puck with his glove, but no whistle was blown, so play carried on.
Blackhawks center Marcus Kruger came charging at Rinne on the right side and appeared to dislodge the puck in the crease as he made contact with the netminder. Kane picked up the rebound and sent it into the mesh for his 16th goal and 24th consecutive game with a point.
But was it a good goal? The Predators didn't think so, challenging the play for interference as the crowd at Bridgestone Arena loudly voiced its displeasure for the officiating and the lack of a whistle after the initial shot on Rinne.
After a review, the marker was ruled a good goal, so Kane's streak will live on. But Rinne continued to appear extremely upset about the sequence of events, having multiple conversations with officials during breaks in the action.
The Predators went on to win the game 5-1. Rinne spoke with the media afterwards and expressed his point of view.
Kane will go for 25 games with a point Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets. That would tie Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby (2010-11) for longest streak of this century.
