Penguins go back to Matt Murray for do-or-die Game 6
TAMPA — Veteran Marc-Andre Fleury is out and rookie Matt Murray is back in as the Pittsburgh Penguins' starting goalie.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced his decision after Tuesday's morning skate prior to Game 6 (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN). Tampa Bay leads the Eastern Conference Final 3-2.
“Matt has played extremely well for us throughout the course of the playoffs,” Sullivan said. “He has won a lot of big games for us. He has made a lot of timely saves for us. He has a calming effect on the group in front of him.”
Fleury, 31, stopped 21 of 25 saves for an .840 save percentage during a 4-3 loss in Sunday's Game 5. He made his first start since March 31 after suffering a concussion. He looked ordinary at best, rusty at worst. Murray, 21, owns a .923 save percentage for the playoffs, but he’s at .889 for this series. He is 9-4 in the playoffs.
“(Murray’s) performance speaks for itself,” Sullivan said. “He’s been thrown into a tough situation and he has handled it extremely well. At this particular point of the season, we don’t have the luxury of allowing players to play through things. We have to win a hockey game. That’s how we looked at it.”
