Sharks forward Patrick Marleau won't have hearing for head hit on Penguins' Bryan Rust
San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau will not have a hearing for his hit to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety said on Twitter that the main points of contact on the hit were the shoulders and chest. It said that Rust was "low, off-balance, reaching."
"Marleau does not 'pick' the head, elevate or extend," the department said on Twitter. "Head contact is with Marleau's back."
The incident occurred at 4:47 of the third period. Marleau was given a two-minute minor for a check to the head. Rust played one shift after the collision and is considered day-to-day. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan called it a "blindside hit to the head" in his comments to reporters after the game.
Marleau told reporters Monday night after the 3-2 loss that he didn’t think he’d be suspended.
"I just tried to keep everything down," Marleau said. "I didn’t try to get him up high. I haven’t seen the replay. ... I kept my shoulder in. I just kind of let him skate into me."
Rust scored in the Penguins' win. He has four goals in his past three games.
