Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov to have season-ending surgery

Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov will undergo surgery to repair an inured groin and miss the rest of the season, the club announced on Thursday.

Varlamov hadn't played since Jan. 17 and missed 12 of the last 18 games. His goals against average (3.38) and save percentage (.898) this season were career lows for the 28-year-old who is in his ninth NHL season.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar told reporters Wednesday that surgery “could be an option” for Varlamov.

“We have to come up with a way to make sure he's either playing or he's doing the right things so he is put in a position to be able to play a lot of games," Bednar said.

At least for now, Colorado will go with Calvin Pickard and Spencer Martin as the team’s goaltending options.
