The Nashville Predators found out the hard way what it means to be on the wrong side of an early whistle — and it cost them the game's first goal.

Center Colton Sissons tapped in a rebound after a shot squeaked through Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray early in the second period of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, but the referees immediately called it off and then huddled up. The whistle had blown — faint as it may be and partially drowned out by crowd noise — before the puck went in.

MORE NHL:

Referee Kevin Pollock had lost sight of the puck, even though the puck was actually loose the entire time. By rule, because the whistle had blown the play dead, it is not reviewable.

The game remained scoreless, but Pittsburgh would score twice in the third period to win it all and knock out the Predators.
