Man charged for threatening mass shooting on day of Vegas Golden Knights' Stanley Cup clincher
Las Vegas police arrested a man for threatening to commit a mass shooting hours before the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup Final Tuesday, according to an arrest report obtained by Paste BN Sports.
The man, identified as 33-year-old Matthew DeSavio, was arrested just before noon Tuesday after police received a report at a business of DeSavio "stating threats to shoot T-Mobile (Arena) during the Vegas Golden Knights Stanley Cup Game," police said. The person who notified authorities told police DeSavio had stalked them for nearly a decade, and when DeSavio showed up at the business, he was arrested.
Meanwhile, several other people contacted police about DeSavio's social media post and messages to individuals, where he claimed Tuesday morning to "want to conduct a mass shooting at T-Mobile Arena," according to the report. DeSavio also made references to Oct. 1, the date in 2017 when a gunman killed 60 people and injured hundreds more at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. He warned the 2017 shooting "was just a preview."
Arrest made
When one of the individuals who reported DeSavio was speaking with police in-person, DeSavio called their phone and began to make threats at the individual, according to the report. DeSavio reportedly was on his way to the individual's office, where he said he planned to harm them. When DeSavio arrived at the office, he was met by officers and arrested without incident about five hours before Game 5 of Stanley Cup Final began.
"As patrol officers were placing DeSavio in the patrol car, DeSavio declared several excited utterances asking if anyone had seen his Facebook posts yet and that the Knights need to win by a certain amount or he will do a repeat of the Mandalay Bay 1 October shooting," the report reads.
Charges
In October, DeSavio was arrested after making the same type of threat in Las Vegas, also referring to the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shooting. Court records showed he was also arrested in Las Vegas in 2014 on charges that include domestic battery and stalking.
"DeSavio has repeatedly engaged willfully and maliciously in a course of conduct that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, harassed or fearful for their immediate safety," the report reads.
The report does not state if detectives discovered any weapons belonging to DeSavio.
DeSavio is charged with one count of threatening an act of terrorism or mass destruction, aggravated stalking and violating a restraining order against the individuals he contacted prior to his arrest, according to online jail records. He is being held at the county jail on $60,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court June 20.
