Mired in a six-game losing streak, the Toronto Maple Leafs have fired head coach Mike Babcock.
Team president Brendan Shanahan made the official announcement Wednesday afternoon that Babcock has been relieved of his duties and that Sheldon Keefe will take over head coaching duties.
Babcock, who led the Detroit Red Wings to the 2008 Stanley Cup title, was in his fifth year with the Leafs -- with an overall record of 173-133-45.
However, the team has failed to live up to high expectations this season. With a record of 9-10-4 the Leafs sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division through Tuesday night's games.
