Connor McDavid calls out Flyers' Brandon Manning after Oilers' loss
Edmonton Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid had some strong words for Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Brandon Manning following the teams' game on Thursday.
McDavid called Manning "classless" for things he allegedly said during Thursday's game, a 6-5 win by Philadelphia.
The heart of the contention comes from McDavid's assertion that Manning admitted during the game that a borderline hit Manning delivered last year in their matchup, which caused McDavid to injure his collar bone and miss a large chunk of his rookie season, was intentional.
"I did all I could defending him last year in the media," McDavid said to media on the scene. "Everyone wanted to make a big deal saying he did it on purpose, and he wanted to say some comments today about what went on last year. I thought it was one of the (most) classless things I've ever seen on the ice. He said some things, and our guys responded accordingly.
"I guess we can put the whole 'if he did it on purpose thing' to rest because what he said out there kind of confirmed that.
"Shows what kind of guy he is the way he doesn't step up and fight some of our guys."
McDavid was clearly not happy.
Manning defended himself, saying in a release from the team:
"I think anybody who knows me or who has played with or against me along the road here, knows that I am not that kind of player. I am not out there intentionally trying to hurt people. I'm a guy who plays the game hard and I take pride in that. I think going back to last year, it was a total accident, I mean, there were three players involved and there was never any intention on hurting anyone."
McDavid and Manning had a brief meeting during the game, and McDavid clearly chirped the Flyers with what appears to be some NSFW language after his second-period goal.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft, McDavid leads the league with 38 points in 29 games.
