Reigning league MVP Connor McDavid agreed to an eight-year, $100 million extension with the Edmonton Oilers that could make the 20-year-old center the highest-paid player in the league when it kicks in.

Next season will be McDavid’s final season under his entry level contract, signed after he was selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

The annual average value of his new deal ($12.5 million) would best the current highest paid players — Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price — by $2 million.

McDavid led the league with 100 points to secure the Art Ross Trophy and won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s MVP last season. The Oilers ended a 10-season playoff drought and made it into the second round of the playoffs.
