Sidney Crosby to join Canada at world championships

The Pittsburgh Penguins' loss is Team Canada's gain.

Hockey Canada announced Sunday that Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will play in next month's world championships. He finished third in the NHL with 84 points and had four points in five games in the first-round loss to the New York Rangers.

Crosby was a staple for Canada at the last two Olympics, scoring key goals in the gold-medal games, but he hasn't played in the world championships since 2005-06, after his rookie season.

Canada will have a star-laden roster at the May 1-17 tournament in the Czech Republic. Crosby joins Tyler Seguin, Claude Giroux, Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Brent Burns, Aaron Ekblad and others.

Arizona Coyotes goalie Mike Smith and Los Angeles Kings backup Martin Jones will be in net.

If Canada wins the tournament, Crosby would have a chance to join the coveted Triple Gold club. He won Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014 and the Stanley Cup in 2009.
