Biles named Woman of Year by Women's Sports Foundation

Another day, another prize for Simone Biles.

The 17-year-old from spring, Texas, was named Woman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation on Wednesday night, the fourth gymnast in seven years to win the award. The honor came two days after Biles returned home from the World Gymnastics Championships, where she became the first woman in 11 years to win back-to-back all-around titles. Biles won three other golds in the team competition, balance beam and floor exercise, as well as a silver on vault, making her the first U.S. woman to win five medals at a single world championships.

With nine career medals at worlds, Biles is one shy of matching the U.S. record set by Alicia Sacramone.

But the Woman of the Year award was for LAST year, when Biles won her first U.S. and world titles. She also won the world title on floor exercise, as well as a silver on vault and bronze on balance beam.

Biles joins Olympic all-around champions Gabby Douglas (2012) and Nastia Liukin (2008) as winners of the Woman of the Year award. Athens Olympian Courtney Kupets (2009) also won the award.

Meryl Davis, who with Charlie White became the first Americans to win the Olympic gold medal in ice dance, won Woman of the Year honors for a team athlete. Kenyan marathoner Tegla Loroupe was honored with the Billie Jean King Contribution award for her efforts to develop and advance women's sports. Noelle Pikus Pace, who came out of retirement to win the silver medal in skeleton in Sochi, received the Wilma Rudolph Courage award.
