Search suspended for Olympic sailor off Florida coast
MIAMI — The search for a missing Olympic sailor was suspended Saturday night by the Coast Guard as darkness settled in on South Florida.
Rescue teams had been searching for Trevor Moore after an inflatable dinghy was found adrift in Dinner Key with his belongings onboard and the engine running.
The three-day search has covered more than 510 square nautical miles, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones affected," Capt. Michael Long, Coast Guard Sector Miami deputy commander, said in the release. "Despite the tireless search efforts by multiple agencies and good Samaritans, we were unable to find Mr. Moore."
U.S. Sailing announced a gofundme page had been created to raise money for search efforts. As of Saturday morning, more than $8,000 had been raised.
The Coast Guard was searching in Biscayne Bay outside Miami for 30-year-old Moore, who was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic sailing team.
Moore is from Naples and was last seen Thursday wearing a dark shirt and swim shorts. The Coast Guard received a report of the unmanned dinghy at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast for boaters to be on the lookout for a possible person in the water.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue, Miami-Dade police and the National Park Service have been assisting in the search.
