USA Rugby releases Todd Clever from roster

USA Rugby released former captain Todd Clever from the Eagles’ Pacific Nations Cup squad due to “multiple squad conduct violations,” the organization announced Sunday.

“Clearly, this is not a pleasant or desirable circumstance for either party,” coach Mike Tolkin said in the press release.

Clever, recently featured in ESPN’s Body Issue, played with the Eagles for 13 seasons, including two World Cups while also competing overseas in Japanese league teams. He was the Eagles’ longest-serving captain, having taken on the role following the 2007 World Cup.

Chris Wyles replaced Clever as captain ahead of the Eagles’ 21-16 loss to Samoa in their opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup on Saturday.

The Eagles will play Japan on Friday in Sacramento.
