Olympic medalists to compete at American Cup
The American Cup, the USA’s top international gymnastics invitational, will include Olympic medalists among its international field.
Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen and Japan’s Ryohei Kato accepted invitations to compete in the event at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on March 5.
USA Gymnastics previously announced that Olympic all-around gold medalist Gabby Douglas and three-time U.S. all-around champion Sam Mikulak would compete as well. World medalists Maggie Nichols and Donnell Whittenburg will also represent the United States.
The international field announced Tuesday includes gymnasts from 11 countries, including Britain’s Nile Wilson and Amy Tinkler, who helped their teams to their first world championship team medals in October.
Kato has a team silver medal from the London Olympics and has four world championship medals. Hambuechen has silver and bronze on the horizontal bar in the past two Olympics along with nine worlds medals. He won the American Cup in 2009.
