Prosecutors to dismiss domestic violence charges against Picabo Street

Prosecutors have decided to dismiss the domestic violence charges against Olympic gold medal-winning skier Picabo Street, according to a published report.

Street, 44, was arrested after allegedly assaulting her 76-year-old father in Park City, Utah, in December. But prosecutors have filed a motion to dismiss the misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse and assault.

The motion was filed by prosecutors on Thursday, Summit County Justice Court clerk Janalee Marchant told Paste BN Sports. Judge Shauna Kerr is out of the office through next week, so the case won’t be fully dismissed until early April upon her return.

“When I called the police for help with my Dad last December, I expected the police to be my knights in shining armor," Street said in a statement. "Instead, they came into my house, arrested me, and put me in handcuffs when I did nothing wrong. The next thing I knew, an embarrassing photograph of me that had been taken at the local jail was circulating on the Internet. That’s no way to treat a nice girl!"

Street's attorney, Joseph Wrona, released a statement Friday that said, in part:

“As I have said from the day I took on Picabo’s defense, the government simply has no evidence to support their charges," Wrona said. "That is why I took the unusual step of waiving the right to a jury trial in order to put the state’s evidence on trial as quickly as the court would schedule a trial.  Picabo did not deserve to have her reputation tarnished and she certainly did not deserve to have an unflattering booking photograph circulating on the internet. Picabo is a caring mother of three wonderful children and she has also been taking care of her own parents in the twilight years of their lives.  It was Picabo who called 911 when her elderly father became unruly this past December, and she did so because she needed help. The County never should have filed charges against Picabo.”

It was alleged that Street pushed her father and then locked him in the basement of her house.

"The Prosecutors just didn’t have any real evidence to support their charges, and I had very powerful evidence proving that Picabo was just trying to manage her family when her father became combative and she acted reasonably in defending herself,” Wrona said.
