Mary Lou Retton making 'remarkable' progress, gymnastics legend's daughter says

The daughter of Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton says she is making "remarkable" progress more than a week after saying Retton was in intensive care at a Texas hospital suffering from pneumonia and “fighting for her life."

Retton's daughter, McKenna Lane Kelley, posted an update on Instagram on Saturday.

"Mom's progress is truly remarkable. Prayers have been felt and are being answered," she wrote. "Although she remains in ICU, her path to recovery is steadily progressing."

Kelley added that Retton's breathing was getting stronger and the reliance on machines was "diminishing."

A fundraising effort to help with Retton's medical costs has raised over $400,000 and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee said this week that they were working on financial assistance to help the 55-year-old Retton.

“Upon learning of Mary Lou's condition, we immediately took action to expedite the application process for her family to receive assistance," USOPC spokeswoman Kate Hartman said to Paste BN Sports. "We are currently working through the necessary details in real-time and have reached out to Mary Lou’s family to offer our assistance.”
