Minions in Paris? Social media reacts as Illumination mascots appear at Olympic opening ceremony

France is pulling out all the stops for a historic opening ceremony to kick off the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The parade of nations, introducing more than 10,000 athletes for the Paris Games, has included musical performances from Lady Gaga and Gojira as the numerous nations make their way along the Seine river. They weren't the only notable appearances, though.
Minions — of the "Despicable Me" franchise and its spinoff movie, "Minions" — made a digital appearance at the opening ceremony on Friday. In a video with the "unknown" athlete running with the Olympic torch, the Minions are seen acting out a scene in a submarine submerged in the Seine.

Illumination ― which produces "Minions" and "Despicable Me" ― is a division of NBCUniversal, which is broadcasting live events from the Paris Olympics, including the opening ceremony. Minions are the mascot of the studio.
