Katie Ledecky won her seventh world title in the 800 meter freestyle on Saturday, Aug. 2 at swimming's world championships, just edging surprise Lani Pallister in a thrilling race while Ledecky's top rival Summer McIntosh finished third.

"I kind of figured it was going to be more than just Summer," said Ledecky after the race. "Definitely the fastest field in the 800 ever ... I'm happy I could come out on top."

McIntosh, who finished 1.67 seconds behind Ledecky, had hoped to match Michael Phelps's feat of five individual gold medals at a single world championships.

Ledecky has dominated the women's 800-meter freestyle for more than a decade, winning gold in the event in four consecutive Olympic Games and six consecutive World Championships. But Canadian teen sensation McIntosh had been on her tail, setting up the showdown at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
