The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are officially underway, and Norway is picking up right where it left off in 2018.

After winning the Pyeongchang Games' medal count, Norway captured the first gold handed out in Beijing. The honors belonged to Therese Johaug, who captured her first individual gold with a dominant victory Saturday in the women’s 15-kilometer skiathlon.

Jessie Diggins, who helped Team USA earn its first gold medal in cross-country skiing with a dramatic close in the 2018 team sprint event, finished sixth.

Johaug was not present at the 2018 Games due to a doping suspension. Russia's Natalia Nepryaeva and Austria's Teresa Stadlober took second and third on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Americans finished seventh in the mixed relay biathlon. The Americans' lone entrant in the women’s 3,000-meter speed skating competition, which saw the Netherlands' Irene Schouten set an Olympic record, finished 19th out of 20 participants.

Here are some of the other notable things you missed Saturday in Beijing while you were sleeping:

This will be Shaun White's last snowboarding competition

The biggest news to emerge overnight for Team USA was Shaun White confirming that these Olympics will be his last snowboarding event of his career.

That's not too surprising considering the three-time gold medalist is now 35, and thus, he's trying to soak up every last moment.

“I really have an idea in my head of what I’d like to put down and as long as I can put that down, then I’m happy,” White said.

“I know that either way, leaving this Olympics, I’m so happy. Just to make it here is such a feat. To enjoy this whole process is special."

Three-time Olympian seeking another gold

U.S. snowboarder Jamie Anderson is the two-time defending gold medalist in women's slopestyle, and she'll try for a third gold Sunday after finishing fifth in qualifying on Saturday

Despite describing the run-up to the Games as an "absolute nightmare" – and facing brutal conditions on Saturday – Anderson put herself back in the mix for gold again with a first-run 74.35. She will be joined in the final by fellow Americans Julia Marino and Hailey Langland.

"I'm excited for tomorrow," Anderson said.

Team USA gets big curling win over China

The U.S. mixed doubles curling team defeated China 7-5 on Saturday, another key win after the team of Vicky Persinger and Chris Plys defeated Sweden on Friday. Now 3-2, they get right back into the action vs. Canada at 7:05 a.m. ET.
