Usain Bolt sings to reporter when asked

RIO DE JANEIRO — Everything you need to know about Usian Bolt was captured in one delightful moment after his 100-meter final victory on Sunday night. Stumped for a question with which the sprint king hadn’t already been asked, a Brazilian television reporter instead tried to get Bolt to sing on camera.

No problem, man.

Bolt launched into an appalling but hilarious rendition of his Jamaican countryman Bob Marley’s One Love. It was typical Bolt, goofy, spontaneous and utterly unafraid to make fun of himself. As usual, it won over the audience…while sending social media into a frenzy.

Yet as he prepares to depart the sport, Bolt fears for its future. Quite simply, there is no one quite like him, and that is an issue.

“I am always going to bring my crazy into the sport,” Bolt said. “The crowd loves the energy. I think hopefully these younger athletes will understand the sport is looking for people who can feel the energy and the vibe. That’s what gets them going. They like to be part of the competition, not just watching it.

“I try to live in the moment. The Brazilian crowd has been extremely great so far, the energy they brought has been ridiculous.”

Bolt’s personality has made him arguably the world’s most beloved athlete and helped track and field through a difficult era all too often tainted by the scourge of doping.

The 29-year-old’s mother Jennifer said last week that she thinks track will be “really boring” without her son, and many fear that unless some vibrant new talent with a penchant for showmanship comes through, she may well be right.

Bolt admitted that concerns over track’s well-being was one of the reasons why he plans to remain a part of it, even after he hangs up his spikes.

“I want to stay in the sport,” he added. “I don’t want to walk away from sports. I want to stay in it. Just to be a part of it, you know what I mean, keep it going. Sports need me so we’ll see if I figure it out and be a part of it.”
