Usain Bolt gives two thumbs up to Vybz Kartel song 'Win'
RIO DE JANEIRO — Usain Bolt has been inspired by a tribute song from a notorious Jamaican reggae performer as he chases down a perfect ending to his Olympic career.
Bolt’s friend Vybz Kartel is one of Jamaica’s most popular yet controversial artists, and this week released a single lauding the sprint icon following his victory in the 100 meters.
“Yes, I have heard it,” Bolt told Paste BN Sports, before grinning and putting both thumbs up when asked if he enjoyed the tune, Win, which was made in honor of Bolt and women’s 100 and 200 champion Elaine Thompson.
Kartel is a polarizing figure in Jamaica, currently serving a 35-year jail term for murder, though it has not stopped him from releasing his records.
Bolt reportedly called for the release of Kartel at a public concert in December and has paid local DJs to play Kartel’s music at events in Kingston.
This is the second time Kartel has sung about Bolt. When the athlete broke the 100 world record in 2009, Kartel released Lightning Bolt to celebrate the feat, which also taunted runner-up Tyson Gay, with lyrics saying Gay should “just bring a silver to USA.”
Bolt will run the 200 final on Thursday night.
