Michigan currently has more Olympic medals than 190 teams

The state of Michigan is having a solid Olympic Games this year.
By our count, as of 4:30 p.m. Friday, athletes with Michigan ties have won 10 gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.
We're no mathematicians, but that adds up to 15 medals.
That total will at least reach 17 by Sunday night. Flint's Claressa Shields is guaranteed a medal since she's boxing in her gold-medal match Sunday. And Saginaw's Draymond Green, formerly of Michigan State fame, is guaranteed a medal as USA men's basketball plays in its gold-medal game Sunday.
So that's 17 medals, with a possibility for more this weekend.
For comparison's sake, as of 4:30 p.m. Friday, there are only 13 countries with 17 or more total medals.
We need to mention an important caveat here: We aren't including solely Michigan natives. We're including all Olympic athletes with solid Michigan ties.
That includes Michael Phelps, the legendary Olympic swimmer who, alone, has six medals, including five golds. He trained at Club Wolverine for four years in Ann Arbor and took classes at the University of Michigan leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics; we call that a significant Michigan tie.
We also include athletes who have spent time at Michigan universities, particularly those who competed in their respective sports of expertise. There's Helen Maroulis, a wrestler who attended Marquette High School in Marquette for a year and trained at Northern Michigan University. She won the gold medal Thursday, the first USA women's wrestler to do so in these Rio 2016 Olympics.
But to be fair, we're also including athletes born and raised in Michigan, such as Canton's Allison Schmitt, who won gold and silver in swimming relay events.
The important message here is this: While the United States is wiping the floor in Rio — a world-leading 105 medals as of Saturday morning, including a world-leading 38 golds — our local athletes are among those making us proud with just two days to go.
