Philadelphia Union trade for Charlie Davies as MLS transfer window closes
With the MLS transfer window set to close on Thursday night, the Philadelphia Union traded for New England forward Charlie Davies in exchange for allocated money and a first-round selection in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, the team announced on Thursday. The Union also received the Revolution’s 2018 first-round selection.
“Charlie adds another dynamic dimension to our attack and is exactly the type of player we targeted during this window,” Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said. “We’re thrilled to be able to add another player of quality and look forward to welcoming him to the club.”
The 30-year-old forward has played in nine of 11 games – starting in just three – this season, scoring a single goal after netting 10 in 2015. Davies has been with the New England club since 2013 and will be sorely missed in the Revolution community.
According to New England president Brian Bilello’s Twitter account, the move was not something the team was looking to make, but rather offered by the Union. Before going through with it, Bilello felt it necessary to check with Davies to see if it was something that he “wanted for him and his family.”
Philadelphia hopes that Davies can return to 2015 form and provide another scoring option on the front line.
