Less than 10 seconds for 1st goal in 1st Europa League match

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — It took a bit more than 10 seconds for the first goal to come in the first match of the Europa League on Thursday, a record for Europe's second-tier competition.

Jan Sykora gave Slovan Liberec the lead when 10.69 seconds were on the clock against Qarabag in a Group J match in Azerbaijan, UEFA said.

Sykora ran onto a loose ball in open space and slotted a low shot past goalkeeper Ibrahim Sehic from the edge of the penalty area.

UEFA confirmed it was a competition record.

In March 2015, UEFA gave a time of 13.21 seconds when Vitolo scored for Sevilla against Villarreal in a round-of-16, first-leg match.

Still, Dutch striker Roy Makaay needed even less time, 10.12 seconds, to score for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid in the Champions League in 2007.
