David Beckham stops before royal wedding to take photo with Manchester bombing survivor
As guests arrived at the royal wedding, David Beckham stopped to hug and take a photo with 12-year-old Amelia Thompson, who survived the May 2017 bombing during a concert in Manchester that killed 22 people.
Thompson was invited to the wedding by Kensington Palace as one of 2,640 members of the public specially invited to attend.
Thompson had a plus-one and instead of bringing her mother, invited Sharon Goodman, whose 15-year-old granddaughter was killed in the attack.
“She’s going through a hard time, so I just wanted to put a smile on her face,” Thompson told the Radio Times.
Before the ceremony, she and Goodman were told that if they needed to use the toilet, they should go before they weren’t allowed to leave their seats. They went out of the church and ran into David and Victoria Beckham, who were just getting out of a coach and walking up to the entrance.
Guards initially told Thompson she couldn’t take a photo with the retired soccer star.
“David Beckham said, 'just do it,'” Thompson said, so she ran up to him and the moment was captured.
“When we actually got there, it was just so amazing seeing those famous people walk past us,” she said in an interview with CNN on Saturday after the wedding.
After the memorable day, Thompson was asked about her thoughts after experiencing the emotions of the last year.
“Just to show terrorism can’t win and that we stand up together" Thompson said. "We will stand together and we will support each other."
