Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar is set to undergo ankle surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the Ligue 1 season.

Neymar sprained his ankle against Lille in late February. He missed the last two games and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months. PSG said in a statement that the surgery will help mitigate the risk of re-injury.

"Neymar Jr. has sustained a number of instances of instability in his right ankle in recent years," PSG said in a statement. "Following his latest sprain on (February 20), the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity."

PSG also announced the surgery will take place in Doha, Qatar.

Neymar joined PSG in 2017 after spending time with Santos FC and FC Barcelona. This season, he has appeared in 20 games (18 starts) and scored 13 goals. PSG owns a 20-3-3 record and has accrued 63 points to lead Ligue 1.

PSG will play Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16. They trail 1-0 ahead of the matchup’s second leg.
