The Concacaf Champions Cup just completed Leg 1 of the quarterfinals, so we're at a critical juncture in this year's edition of the tournament. So, here's your two-minute, 15-second read on the latest Concacaf Champions Cup happenings …

Major League Soccer — which has claimed just one champion in the tournament's modern iteration (Seattle Sounders, 2022) — has four teams remaining. The league is guaranteed at least one spot in the semifinals because Inter Miami and Los Angeles FC are playing each other in the quarterfinals. The reigning MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy and Canada's team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, face must-win situations in a place where MLS teams rarely collect victories: Mexico.

The big showdown so far took place in Los Angeles late into the night on Wednesday (this was MLS Well After Dark with the game ending around 1:30 a.m. ET). In what will go down in Los Angeles sports lore as "The Nathan Ordaz Game," LAFC earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lionel Messi's team in front a star-studded crowd at BMO Stadium. Leg 2 is slated for next Wednesday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (8 p.m. ET on FS1).

The Whitecaps, coming off a stunning upset of Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey in the previous round, settled for a 1-1 draw with Pumas after giving up a late goal at home. Leg 2 is Wednesday in Mexico City (10:30 p.m. ET on FS1).

The Galaxy and Tigres — the 2020 Concacaf Champion Cup/League winner — played to a 0-0 tie in Carson, California. Leg 2 is Tuesday in metropolitan Monterrey (9 p.m. ET on FS1). It should be noted that the Galaxy and LAFC are on opposite sides of the bracket, so there's a chance for El Tráfico in the Concacaf Champions Cup final. Wouldn't that be fun!

In the other quarterfinal, Liga MX stalwarts Club America and Cruz Azul played to a 0-0 tie, and Leg 2 is on Tuesday (11:30 p.m. ET on FS1). Club America and Cruz Azul have combined to win 13 Concacaf Champions Cup/League titles, though the most recent triumph for either club came in 2016 (by Club America).

Outside of the Inter Miami-LAFC showdown, things seem shaky for the other MLS sides in Concacaf Champions Cup.

Here's what else to know about what's on tap in MLS:

MLS game of the week: San Diego FC vs. Seattle Sounders

A month and a half into the 2025 MLS season, expansion side San Diego FC is in the thick of the Western Conference race. The Seattle Sounders — who have made the playoffs in 15 of their 16 MLS seasons — currently are not, sitting in 12th place in the Western Conference with just one win in six games. Still, Seattle is expected to be among the league's top teams by the time the season reaches Decision Day.

San Diego FC is off to the kind of start that might be reminiscent of what St. Louis City SC pulled off two seasons ago, topping the Western Conference as an expansion team. That was a huge surprise. It would be a stunner if San Diego could match that, but a 3-2 win over new Southern California rival LAFC was quite a statement.

Mexican international Hirving "Chucky" Lozano returned for San Diego FC in last week's win after missing time with a knock. This is huge for San Diego, which has gotten production from Anders Dreyer (three goals and an assist) and Onni Valakari (two goals and three assists) during its impressive start.

For Seattle, Jordan Morris remains the primary goal-scoring threat (three so far). The offseason acquisitions of "The Pirate of the Caribbean," Jesus Ferreira and Paul Arriola have not panned out. While Arriola is out indefinitely with an ACL tear, Ferreira has yet to net a goal.
