Everton faces UEFA discipline after fan holding child participates in soccer brawl

UEFA, European soccer's governing body, has charged English club Everton with "aggressions by supporters against players" after a man holding a small child appeared to throw punches during a brawl between soccer teams on Thursday.

A disciplinary hearing for the club is slated for Nov. 16, the BBC reports

In the 64th minute of the Europa League group-stage match in Liverpool between Everton and French club Lyon, pushing and shoving began between the teams near the edge of the field and sideline. That's when the fan joined the action and appeared to push Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

"I don't think it is part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this," Lopes told reporters after the game, which Lyon went on to win 2-1.

Merseyside Police in North West England are investigating the incident. The man was not publicly identified but has been banned by Everton from returning.

“Club officials have reviewed the footage of an incident where supporters towards the front of the lower Gwladys Street End became involved in a confrontation between players,” Everton said in a club statement. “We have identified one individual against whom action will now be taken. This will include a ban from attending future Everton fixtures, and the club registering a formal complaint with Merseyside Police.”
