Real Madrid survive, top La Liga table with comeback victory over winless Almería

Real Madrid defeated Almería on Sunday thanks to an incredible second half comeback.

With a push to the top of the La Liga table on the line, Madrid were down two goals to none at the half against the club at the very bottom of the league.

Almería, a team still looking for its first La Liga win of the season, bookended the first half with first-minute and 43rd-minute goals.

Largie Ramazani converted the first shot of the match just 38 seconds into the contest, and center back Edgar González ripped an incredible shot from well outside of the penalty box to put Almería up, 2-0.

The second half was almost all Real Madrid.

Jude Bellingham (P), Vinicius Junior and Dani Carvajal scored goals in the 57th, 67th and 90+9th minutes, respectively. Carvajal's goal to put Madrid in front in the final moments of stoppage time – with a nice assist from Bellingham – threw Santiago Bernabéu Stadium into a state of pandemonium.

Real Madrid vs. Almería controversial VAR calls

Madrid's win wasn't without its fair share of controversy, most of which stemmed from a couple of crucial VAR decisions.

First, the penalty awarded to Bellingham was a result of a VAR review after a contested ball hit Kaiky's arm in the penalty box.

Minutes later, Almería had a goal disallowed in the 61st minute after VAR determined that a yellow card foul should have been called earlier in the play.

Only a few minutes after that, Junior's goal for Madrid was upheld by VAR despite evidence it may have been a handball.
