Alex Morgan out for rest of World Cup qualifying with ankle injury
Alex Morgan will miss the rest of the CONCACAF tournament, which serves as qualifying for the 2015 World Cup, after spraining her left ankle Friday night, U.S. Soccer announced Saturday afternoon.
Morgan was on crutches after getting hurt in a collision with a Guatemalan player in the 37th minute. An MRI exam on Saturday revealed no further damage, but she'll be out 4-6 weeks.
Morgan injured this same ankle last fall and was sidelined for seven months.
The U.S. beat Guatemala 5-0 and has a 2-0 record in the group stage of the tournament.
Rather than travel with the team to Washington, D.C. for the rest of group play — the team is scheduled to face Haiti on Monday night at RFK Stadium — or to Philadelphia should the U.S. make it to the semifinals and final, Morgan will return home and rehab.
"We certainly feel for Alex and of course having her go down is a big loss to our team, but as I've often said, one of our strengths is depth and everyone on the roster is prepared to step up," coach Jill Ellis said in a statement. "After talking with our medical staff and Alex, we all agreed that the best course of action for her is to head home to minimize travel and get into an environment where she can totally focus on recovery."
Though Morgan started both qualifying games for the United States and has scored 49 goals in 77 matches, the U.S. does have great depth up top. Sydney Leroux had two assists in Friday's match and Christen Press, who came in for Morgan, would have had a goal if not for an offside call. There's also Amy Rodriguez and Abby Wambach.
"It's unfortunate timing, but I know my teammates will take care of business and qualify for the World Cup and I'll be watching from my couch," Morgan said. "I have plenty of time to get healthy with a longer break coming up for the team so my job is to focus on the rehab and get back healthy as soon as I can."
