LHP Eduardo Rodriguez vs. RHP Marcus Stroman
Rodriguez sports a 4.89 ERA through nine starts and 49 2/3 innings to open the year but his 3.55 xFIP is a strong indication he's been the victim of some poor luck thus far. He's striking out 10.15 hitters per nine with 2.90 walks allowed and an average of 0.72 homers surrendered. Poor defense is resulting in a .364 batting average on balls in play despite a hard-contact rate of just 26.4 percent.
Stroman is starting out on pace for the best season of his career with a 2.95 ERA through 10 starts and 58 innings, but he has just one win with very little run support. He's striking out 7.91 hitters per nine and has allowed just three home runs with a groundball rate of 56.7 percent. He's inducing a career-best 10.8 percent swinging strike rate.
Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays: By the Numbers
- The two teams split their first two meetings in April with the Red Sox winning Monday's third game in the head-to-head season series. All three games played to the OVER and two of three were decided by two or more runs.
- Toronto fell to 8-14 straight up at home with Monday's loss and is now just 7-15 against the spread. It's also 7-15 against the total while at home in the league's seventh-most homer-friendly park.
- Only two teams have a worse collective OPS against left-handed pitching than Toronto's .618 team rate. The Red Sox rank 10th in team OPS against righties at a clip of .779, but they also have the 10th-highest groundball rate.
- The Blue Jays and Red Sox rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in bullpen ERA. Only four units strikeout as many hitters per nine as Boston's.
