Who will be the NFL offensive rookie of the year? Here are the 7 best options

Who cares if the NFL season is months away? That isn't going to stop us from thinking about which NFL rookies will shine brighter than the rest during the 2019 NFL season. On top of that, rookie NFL prop bets are being released by sportsbooks, so it has our NFL juices flowing.

This year's NFL offensive rookie class isn't as exciting as we've seen in recent years and, generally, the NFL Draft was boring this year if you were looking for offensive playmakers to be chosen early. There are, however, still a lot of options on the table for NFL sports betting and fantasy football success in 2019.

If you're looking to make an NFL future bet on this year's NFL offensive rookie of the year, I've compiled the top seven players I think have the best opportunity to return a profit. Here's some things to also consider:

Since 1990…

  • 59 percent of OROY players have been running backs
  • 24 percent have been quarterbacks
  • 17 percent have been wide receivers
  • No other position won the award (so ignore the offensive linemen in this year's odds, those are silly bets)

Since 2008…

  • 45 percent of OROY players have been quarterbacks
  • 36 percent have been running backs
  • 18 percent have been wide receivers

History tells us that either a quarterback or running back is more than likely to win the award in 2019.

Three running backs (Saquon Barkley, Alvin Kamara and Todd Gurley) have won the award in the past five years, while one quarterback (Dak Prescott) and one wide receiver (Odell Beckham) rounded out the top five.

NFL Future Bets: Top 7 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Options

7. WR Mecole Hardman, Kansas City Chiefs (+1800)

Jason Getz - Paste BN Sports

A bit boom or bust out of the gate: Hardman is an interesting option, but much of his success will be dictated by what happens with Chiefs star WR Tyreek Hill, who is dealing with serious off-the-field issues and could find himself disciplined by the league. If Hill is cleared and plays the season, Hardman's production will be spotty. If Hill misses a bit of time, or worse, Hardman and his 4.33-second 40 should step into the starting lineup and could flourish behind the strong arm of QB Patrick Mahomes.

Hardman is worth an investment due to his potential opportunity on this high-powered offense.

6. WR DK Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks (+2300)

Mark Zerof - Paste BN Sports

I like the upside ROI on this pick, especially with the release and retirement of WR Doug Baldwin in Seattle. Metcalf is going to have a large role early in the year. Can he turn that into production? That's the +2300 dollar question, really.

He's worth an investment, as his size, speed and physical dominance could propel him to leading Seattle in receiving yardage and touchdowns in 2019. If he contributes to another deep-playoff run for the Seahawks, he'll get plenty of attention.

5. WR N'Keal Harry, New England Patriots (+2000)

The Patriots desperately need help at wide receiver, especially with TE Rob Gronkowski retiring (Is he really retired? We analyze here…). Julian Edelman was given a contract extension and, while he's good for a ton of dump passes in the slot, the Patriots need more production on the outside. If Josh Gordon isn't cleared to return from his indefinite suspension and Andre Johnson doesn't recover well from his latest Achilles' injury, Harry is poised to see significant snaps.

It's a tough offense for a rookie to learn, but he has the potential to be a solid weekly target for QB Tom Brady in '19.

4. RB David Montgomery, Chicago Bears (+1200)

Jay Biggerstaff - Paste BN Sports

I wasn't a fan of the Bears punting on Jordan Howard (now with Philadelphia Eagles), but they replaced him with a solid back in Montgomery, who will share plenty of snaps with Tarik Cohen.

The Chicago offense has the opportunity to make a star out of a feature back, but the split touches will limit Montgomery's upside. Regardless, he's an interesting option for a small wager with solid return.

3. QB Dwayne Haskins, Washington Redskins (+1000)

Odds are high that Haskins will be the team's No. 1 quarterback early in the season, possibly as early as Week 1. Quarterbacks get a lot of attention and rookie of the year votes. The biggest problem here is Haskins doesn't have a lot of dependable options in the passing game. That'll hurt his overall stats and chances of being ROY, which keeps me lukewarm on a wager here.

2. RB Josh Jacobs, Oakland Raiders (+600)

Jacobs, a first-round NFL Draft pick for Oakland, should be the primary ball carrier in the upcoming year. He wasn't a full-time back in the college ranks, so he doesn't have the mileage and should be ready for a much larger role - as a rusher and a receiver out of the backfield - in the NFL. The return here is solid and if some stars align, Jacobs could push for top rookie honors. But he has some serious competition in the form of…

1. QB Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals (+230)

Let's be honest, quarterbacks are the sexy picks for rookie of the year. The talking heads will focus way too much time on Murray, this year's No. 1 overall selection in the NFL Draft. They touch the ball on almost every offensive snap. Murray, who will start immediately, is in a good position to post the best numbers among this year's quarterback class… the defense isn't great and he's going to use his legs to make plays, too. He also is viewed by the sportsbooks as the most likely to be this year's offensive ROY, which diminishes his value a tad. At +230, there's still solid return on your investment though. Murray looks most likely of this group to provide a winning ticket.
