Duke, ranked No. 3 in the Paste BN Sports Coaches Poll, looks to start the 2nd season under coach John Scheyer in dominant fashion over Dartmouth on Monday night in Durham. The Blue Devils won the ACC Tournament championship and finished 27-9 -- a solid rookie season for a coach having to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Mike Krzyzewski.
The Blue Devils were picked to finish 1st in the ACC in the league’s preseason poll. Kyle Filipowski, Duke's leader in points (15.1) and rebounds (8.9) last season, was voted the ACC preseason player of the year.
It is rare to see a Duke team with so much experience returning to the court. They bring back G Jeremy Roach who averaged 13.6 points and 3.1 assists per game last season and G Tyrese Proctor (9.4 PPG) and F Mark Mitchell (9.1). We should also see big contributions from celebrated freshmen G Jared McCain and G Caleb Foster as well.
It was a rough 2022-23 season for the Big Green going 10-18 and 6-8 in Ivy League play. There is reason for optimism in New Hampshire as they return 7 players, led by their captains G Robert McRae III and G Romeo Myrthil. Dartmouth was picked to finish 7th in the Ivy League preseason poll.
The Blue Devils have not lost a season opener since 1999 against Stanford. This will be the 1st time Duke faces Dartmouth, but the Blue Devils are 56-9 all-time against Ivy League teams.

When I'm betting this early in the college basketball season, I like to target senior led mid-major programs to give these Power 5 schools a run for their money but that's not the case with Duke this season. I am confident this returning veteran squad will get ahead early in this one and let the 2nd-string players get a lot of run in the 2nd half.
Duke has lost just 1 game at home to a non Power 5 school since the 2000 season -- in 2019 on a buzzer-beater layup by Stephen F Austin in overtime.

I like to bet Under a lot early in the college basketball season as these players are getting used to their roles and minutes. My lean is the Over as you can tell from my prediction but I'm going to avoid actually betting on it.
